South River was originally known as Washington, part of East Brunswick, but now is an independent borough of more than 15,000 residents in Middlesex County, New Jersey. South River occupies a 2.9 square miles area in total.
The South River Public Schools serve students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. South River Primary School educates students in kindergarten through second grade and South River Elementary School serves children in grades three through five. The South River Middle School educates the six through eighth graders while the ninth through twelfth grade students attend South River High School.
South River sits along Route 18, just east of Interstate 95.
