In the northern most part of Middlesex County a borough of 22,600 residents is located right in the heart of New Jersey. South Plainfield occupies 8.4 square miles of land and was once a part of Piscataway before 1926.
The South Plainfield Public Schools serves students in Pre-K through twelfth grade. There are four elementary schools in South Plainfield serving children Kindergarten through fourth grade including Franklin Elementary School, John F. Kennedy Elementary School, John E.Riley Elementary School, and Roosevelt Elementary School. These schools have about 1,300 students enrolled. Grant Elementary School educates students grades five and six while South Plainfield serves students grades seven and eight, both educating more than 600 students. South Plainfield High School had about 1,200 students enrolled from grades nine through twelve.
South Plainfield is located near Interstate 287, a major roadway in northern New Jersey as well as State Highway 28.
