Edison was ranked the 28th most livable small city in America by Money Magazine and ranked 2nd in New Jersey in 2006 by MONEY Magazine's "Best Places To Live". This town occupies 30.7 square miles of Middlesex County, New Jersey,and has a population over 99,000. In the 1950’s, Edison went through a name change. It was originally named Raritan Township, but not to be confused with the Raritan Township in Hunterdon County residents chose to rename their town Edison after the American Inventor.
The Edison Township Public Schools are an enormous district consisting of eleven elementary schools, four middle schools, and two high schools. All the schools are located and associated with either the North of South zones. In the zone to the south, there are six kindergarten through fifth grade elementary schools including, Benjamin Franklin Elementary, James Monroe Elementary, John Marshall Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, Lindeneau Elementary and Washington Elementary. John Marshall, Lindeneau, and Washington graduates attend Thomas Jefferson Middle School for grades six to eight. James Monroe, Benjamin Franklin, and Lincoln graduates attend Herbert Hoover Middle School for grades six to eight. Thomas Jefferson and Herbert Hoover graduates go on to attend Edison High School in the south zone. In the zone to the north there are five kindergarten through fifth grade elementary schools. They are James Madison Primary School, who then move on to James Madison Intermediate School for grades three through five. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary, Menlo Park Elementary and Woodbrook Elementary are the other elementary schools in the district. Menlo Park and Woodbrook graduates attend Woodrow Wilson Middle School for sixth through eight. James Madison Intermediate and MLK Jr. graduates attend John Adams Middle School for grades six through eight. Woodrow Wilson Middle School and John Adams Middle School graduates move on to J.P. Stevens High School for grades nine through twelve.
Middlesex Community College, a two-year public college is also located in Edison. Edison also has various private schools.
Edison Township hosts various roadways. State roads include Route 27, and 440. Route 1 and Interstate 287 also pass through the township. New Jersey Transit Rail and bus lines provide service for Woodbridge residents that travel to Newark and New York.
